Band and session recording

A 32 m² live room for drums and amps, a booth for overdubs, and an engineer who balances the ensemble — without breaking your band’s flow.

Band plays live in recording room while engineer watches from control.

Band and session recording at Peonscale is for groups that want to play together instead of stacking tracks alone at home. Drums sit on rugs, guitars and bass through amps or straight to the desk; we mic the setup like a rehearsal, but with 32 inputs and room to edit later.

Besides full bands we host session players, duos with live drums and producers who need a rhythm section for a day. Overdubs happen in the booth or in the live room when it fits. Schedule vocal recording separately afterward; book mixing when tracks are ready.

How it works

  1. 01

    Planning

Send setlist, tempos and a rough map per song. We reserve mics and draft a day schedule.

  2. 02

    Setup

Place kit and amps, line check and headphone mixes. Day rate includes setup time.

  3. 03

    Tracking

Live passes per song, punch-ins where needed. We keep tempo and structure notes.

  4. 04

    Overdubs

Extra guitars, percussion or vocals in the booth. Overdub-only hourly rate if the band has left.

Live room layout

The live room is about 32 m² — enough for a drum kit, two amps and standing players, small enough to keep phase and spill manageable. Guitar and bass amps are angled where possible so bleed into vocal mics stays low. Drums can be open or partly screened; we decide per session.

Control looks through the window or open corner into the room. The console (32 channels) and reference monitors sit there. Between takes you get feedback without long breaks.

Capacity and lineup

In practice up to 6 musicians fit at once including the drummer. Larger line-ups slow changeovers and monitoring — mention it upfront. Session players who only do overdubs can come in blocks under the overdub hourly rate.

Minimum age 16 without a guardian. For school bands or youth projects, list ages in your request. Opening hours: Monday–Friday 10:00–19:00, Saturday 11:00–17:00, closed on Sunday. at Van Ostadestraat 184 in De Pijp.

How a recording day runs

A typical day starts with setup and soundcheck — included in the ten-hour day rate. Then we track songs in setlist order, usually live with optional click. After each pass we briefly decide whether to move on or redo a section.

Drum or bass punch-ins work while the drummer hears the same click in headphones. Guitars can be re-cut in the booth if amp bleed in the room is too much. Read planning a band session for tempo maps and who owns what.

What to prepare

Prepare:

  • Setlist with tempos (BPM) and structure (intro, bridge, outro)
  • Tuning and fresh strings where needed; we provide standard cables and DIs
  • Your own amps if you prefer — share wattage and size beforehand
  • Production references, not necessarily the same genre you play

If you only book drums or a rhythm section, say which tracks already come from your home studio. For handing stems to an external mixer later, see delivering stems for mix.

Monitoring and communication

Each musician gets an individual headphone mix or a shared submix per section, depending on available sends. Drummers often hear kick, bass and click; guitarists hear drums and bass. We adjust levels between takes without stopping the whole session.

In the room we use hand signals and talkback to the booth. Sanne Bakker or Maarten de Vries runs tracking; on larger dates we clarify roles upfront via contact.

Delivery and file layout

Default export: multitrack WAV per mic/DI, 24-bit 48 kHz, folder per song with clear names (kick_in, snare_top, gtr_L). You get a download link within a few business days unless we already export a first pass on the day for review.

Editing (trimming silence, drum tuning fixes) sits outside pure recording time and can be booked separately. Peonscale B.V. keeps sessions 24 months; after that we delete backups unless you ask for extension. Keep your own archive — we are not your only copy.

FAQ

Can we record everything live in one pass?

Often yes for rock, indie or jazz; we mic so spill stays controllable. For tight pop with heavy editing we sometimes plan extra overdub hours.

Should we bring sticks and amps?

Bring sticks and picks. Bass and guitar amps can be yours; we also record DIs. A drum kit is on site — discuss snare and cymbal preferences beforehand.

How many songs fit in one day?

Plan three to six songs live depending on complexity and retakes. The plan in our guide helps build a realistic setlist.

Is there parking?

Peonscale is in De Pijp, about a 6-minute walk from De Pijp metro station (M52). Trams 1, 3 and 7 serve Ceintuurbaan; from the Stadhouderskade stop it is roughly a 4-minute walk. On-street parking is limited; public transport or cycling works best. Cycling or public transport works best. Align load-in windows via contact.

When do we hear back after an enquiry?

Within 2 business days with availability and a proposal for hourly, day or overdub booking.
