Podcast and interview recording

Record conversations without home-room echo: one mic per voice, headphone monitoring and an engineer watching levels while you focus on the talk.

Two podcasters with microphones at table in bright recording corner.

Recording at home with a USB mic works for drafts, but interviews with guests, panel shows or brand podcasts often need steady levels, low room noise and files that drop straight into your host. At our recording studio on Van Ostadestraat 184 in De Pijp we set up two to four speakers at once, with a 9 m² booth when someone needs isolation while hosts sit in the control area.

The service targets spoken content: interviews, internal shows, Q and A sessions and narrative non-fiction — not full music production in the same block. Sanne Bakker and Maarten de Vries alternate session days; rates include 21% VAT. For single-voice work without a panel, see vocal and spoken-word recording.

Projects that fit

Company podcasts with regular hosts, journalistic interviews, community shows with in-studio guests, academic Q and A and creators moving off Zoom toward stable audio — that is the sweet spot. We aim for clarity and intelligibility, not cinematic sound design.

Video podcasts with a camera crew can work when space and schedule allow; discuss footprint upfront. We usually do not add live audience beyond four speakers at the table because of acoustics and monitoring. Music intros or jingles are best recorded separately or supplied as files.

Space and gear

Peonscale has 3 working rooms; podcast sessions mostly use the vocal area and control room with treated surfaces so voices do not sound like a bathroom. We have 12 mic preamps — enough for a panel plus spare.

Each speaker gets dynamic or condenser mics depending on voice and room; we avoid aggressive gates that chop words in half. Headphone mixes are per person so guests hear themselves and the host without feedback.

How a session runs

The €249 bundle covers two hours of recording with two hosts and an engineer — enough for a 45–60 minute episode after warm-up and breaks, or shorter content with retakes. Extra time bills at €79 per hour.

Three or four speakers? Allow extra setup; we sometimes recommend a third hour for routing and monitoring. Peonscale is in De Pijp, about a 6-minute walk from De Pijp metro station (M52). Trams 1, 3 and 7 serve Ceintuurbaan; from the Stadhouderskade stop it is roughly a 4-minute walk. On-street parking is limited; public transport or cycling works best. — open Monday–Friday 10:00–19:00, Saturday 11:00–17:00, closed on Sunday.. Minimum studio age is 16; younger participants only with guardian agreement under terms.

What to bring

Rundown or question list, names for file labels, sponsor reads on paper if any, and a target length. Guests need no experience; we explain mic distance and headphone handling.

Water and notes are on hand; avoid rustling clothes and jewellery that taps the mic. Remote guests via Riverside or Skype need a compatibility check upfront — we can feed mix-minus but do not replace your laptop IT support.

Edit and export

Basic edit means trimming start/end, clean fades, level balance between voices and removing obvious false starts — not an hour of “um” removal unless you book it. Post-production bills at €65 per hour; a typical episode often needs one to two hours depending on tightness.

Export: 24-bit WAV per host plus stereo mixdown for preview. Podcast hosts (Spotify for Podcasters, Transistor, etc.) usually want mono or stereo mp3 on request — send platform specs. Broadcast loudness is optional; see loudness guide for EBU targets.

Scheduling and turnaround

Studio slots fill on weekday afternoons; book via contact or 020 737 4826. We confirm within 2 business days. Edit after recording usually takes three to five business days once we have your cut notes.

Rush edit is sometimes possible at extra cost when the calendar allows. Pairing recording with mastering for intro music? Plan separate deliverables — speech and music masters follow different workflows.

FAQ

How many speakers at once?

Two to four at the table is standard. More than four needs a planning call on monitoring and mics; we avoid crowded setups that hurt quality.

Is edit mandatory?

No. You can take raw stems only. Many clients book one to two hours of €65 for a tight first episode.

Can I live-stream an episode?

Yes, if you bring streaming software and manage bandwidth. We provide a clean audio tap where possible; test ahead via [email protected].

How is this different from voice-over recording?

Vocal recording focuses on one voice in the booth, coaching and comping for music or VO. Podcast is conversation with multiple mics and panel dynamics.
